Abstract: | This thesis explores the design of urban crematoriums and their role in shaping our relationship with death and the urban environment. Drawing on literature about death and life, the study argues that crematoriums are an essential component of a city's infrastructure, providing a final resting place for the deceased and a space for mourners to grieve and reflect. However, crematoriums are often denied in urban design and planning due to their sensitive and stigmatized nature, leading to their isolation and inadequate design. The research investigates the challenges and opportunities in designing urban crematoriums that address the needs of mourners and integrate seamlessly into the urban fabric. Through a combination of case studies, literature review, and design proposals, the study identifies key design considerations, such as location, orientation, circulation, and aesthetics, that can enhance the functionality and dignity of crematoriums. The thesis concludes that urban crematoriums have the potential to be transformative public spaces that foster a sense of community, cultural identity, and sustainability. However, this requires a paradigm shift in how crematoriums are perceived and designed, emphasizing their vital role in the urban context. The study recommends further research and policy interventions to promote innovative and inclusive design practices for urban crematoriums. |
