SCHOOL FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Abstract

The project school for visually impaired is the institution building for the people/ children with the visual impairment.This project tends to create a design which not only be accessible by people with visually impairment but also raises their independence and confidence.The people with visual impairment experiences partiality in many terms such as social, economic and even in term of architecture in their day to day life. Being a visually dominant creatures we highly rely on our visual senses but as a designer we must also consider other senses rather than just focusing on the sight. We must consider the safety and easy accessibility for all the users of the building. Before proceeding to design certain desk studies were done which included of the literature review, case studies and analysis .These studies rooted towards the barrier free environment design where the user group can move independentely. Purwanchal Gyanchakshu school, Namuna Machhindra School, Disabled service association were chosen for National case study whereas Hazelwood school, Center for blind and visually impaired were chosen for International Case study. Case studies were done considering the relevancy of the project. Then an appropriate site was chosen at Janagal, Banepa considering the services and utilities. The chosen site has different institution and differentently abled hospitals at a nearby proximity . While doing the project certain design approaches where considered such as zoning were done considering the users preferences, similarly simple planning were done. The changes in flooring materials were done such as a certain flooring material is used on the pathway whereas the flooring materials changes as we approach to the boundary of the buildings. Similarly the design is done considering all the senses. The student in the school will feel the building in the project through multisensory experiences. In conclusion, this school for visually impaired is an institutional building which includes of the school and training activities for the betterment of the visually impaired students which aim to provide quality education, independent living skills to the people with visual impairment.
